AUSTRALIAN GAY & LESBIAN TRAVEL ASSOCIATION
Annual Tourism, Leisure and Culture EXPO
This is Australia's only gay and lesbian travel show and it provided the best opportunity to find out information on holiday opportunities, cultural, tourism and specialised leisure activities. Last year over 2,000 people attended the EXPO and organisers expect a record number for this year's event. There were many holiday prizes to be won. Survey results from the 1993 EXPO confirmed that the majority of EXPO visitors travelled frequently within Australia and took an overseas trip at least every three years. Earlier this year the Australian Gay and Lesbian Travel Association was awarded the honour of hosting the 1996 International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association World Congress. This was the first time this prestigious event has been held outside North America. Sydney hosted over 500 delegates and their partners at this very important World Congress.

THE FROZEN CITY
Darling Harbour
"The Frozen City", a magnificent walk-through city carved in ice, at Darling Harbour was one of the most spectacular attractions ever seen in Australia. Located in the far north east of China, Harbin the capital city of the Heilongjiang province, is internationally renowned for its visually stunning annual Ice and Lantern Show. Having toured Canada, Singapore, Thailand and Korea, for the very first time Australian families experienced the brilliance of this ancient craft. Thirty-five ice carvers from Harbin travelled to Australia to create an enchanted ice city built entirely from huge blocks of clear ice. Five metre high Chinese temples and dragons, together with the Sydney Opera House and other world monuments, created this fantasy ice city. 2,000 blocks of ice, each 1m x 65cm x 30cm, made up the 200 cubic metres of ice needed to build the dazzling ice city. Some 600 large tubes of silicon glue were used to cement the massive ice blocks together.
