COVER UP
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
A National Library of Australia Travelling Exhibition
Cover Up celebrates the look and style of the Australian magazine cover between the wars. This stunning exhibition, featured original art work by well-known artists like Margaret Preston, Thea Proctor, Lloyd Rees, Douglas Annand, Norman Lindsay and May Gibbs. Cover Up was about jazz age Australia and the modernisation process it underwent between the wars. This was a time when the borders between graphic propaganda, offering new models of consumer identification, and 'high art' were breaking down; when the artists were exploiting fashionable and democratic art genres for consumer society; printmaking, illustration, advertising art and magazine cover art. It heralded the development of an impressive graphic tradition in Australia.

THE RUBBERY YEARS
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
A National Museum of Australia Travelling Exhibition
Peter Nicholson's Rubbery Figures first became popular in the 1980s. It was the decade when greed was good, entrepreneurs had big yachts, breweries, and media moguls and their wives had big hair. When the property market boomed and bad taste was in fashion, Joh was Premier and Bob Hawke was the King of Charisma. Perfect material for a political satirist – this was the exhibition we had to have. Rubbery Figures provided an opportunity to view and explore Nicholson's perspective and inspirations on art, politicians, economics and world affairs.

CAZNEAUZ – THE FORGOTTEN GENIUS
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
In 1909 Harold Cazneaux held the first individual photographic exhibition in Australia. This was to herald a career that spanned the first half of the twentieth century and establish Cazneaux as one of Australia's great photographers. The exhibition will feature over eighty Cazneaux photographs drawn from the collection of the National Library of Australia and the personal archive of the Cazneaux family, many works have not been seen publicly before. A leader in the Australian Pictorial Movement, Cazneaux championed the notion of the photographer as an artist. Although he abhorred the work of traditional studios, Cazneaux spent twenty years working for the very traditional Freeman studios in Sydney. His creative and sensitive nature was constantly at odds with the painted backdrops, fake furniture and stilted figures that were all part of the mummery of photographic portraiture of the time.

 GOLD FEVER
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Gold Fever!, a joint project between the National Library of Australia and Sovereign Hill, brought together the Library's unique collection with original material from one of Australia's leading historical tourist attractions. The exhibition used a wide range of images, objects, rare documents and soundscapes to guide the visitor through a wonderful journey of Australian history between 1851 and 1855 including the famous Eureka Rebellion. Detailed watercolours by the great artist S.T. Gill, large watercolours and pencil drawings by Henry Winkles and fine works by John Gilfillan, David Tulloch and Thomas Balcombe bring to life the colourful gold rush days. The great Gold Fields Petition of 1853, signed by thousands of diggers was also on display for the first time outside Victoria.

THE DOMESTIC REVOLUTION
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
The drudgery of the labour-intensive 19th century kitchen caused a feminist revolt that still boils. The Domestic Revolution suggests why, with a full scale reconstruction of an early kitchen. Then after looking at the Formica fantasies of the ultra-efficient kitchens of the 1950's, the exhibition concluded with a 21st century Hyper-kitchen developed by Melbourne futurist architect and designer Michael Trudgeon. Kitchen equipment, the gadget fetish, Australian bush slang for cooks and cook's helpers (slushies and greasies), the relationship between Modern Design and Madness, and the origins of the humble billycan are just a few of the topics explored by curator Michael Bogle in The Domestic Revolution.

WOOL IN THE AUSTRALIAN IMAGINATION
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Wool In The Australian Imagination was the first exhibition to explore great and historic Australian woollen moments – through song, painting, politics, poetry, food, those memorable woollen bathing costumes and the national symbols we all recall, like the two dollar note and the Golden Fleece petrol logo. Wool In The Australian Imagination featured significant examples of sheep and wool in fine art, weaving and tapestry, science, and fashion, plus pieces from museums, galleries, private collections and artists throughout Australia.

A FAIR TO REMEMBER!
Australia 's oldest building celebrates 200 years
Elizabeth Farm
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Elizabeth Farm, the oldest known European building in Australia, launched an exciting program of events for its bicentennial year with a Colonial Fair. Elizabeth Farm was built in 1793 – five years after European settlement of the colony of New South Wales. The colony's first fair was held some twenty years later, in Parramatta in March 1813. Like a traditional English marketplace, the fair served as a place to buy and sell animals and produce. The first home of John and Elizabeth Macarthur, Elizabeth Farm stands on one of the earliest land grants, dated 25 February 1793 - a parcel of 100 acres set by the river a short distance from Parramatta Town. Now preserved as a house museum, Elizabeth Farm was the centre of much of the agricultural, social and political activity of the early colony. It was here that the first plough was used; Macarthur experimented in merino wool; and NSW Corps officers hatched their plots against the early governors.

A brief tour of the Museum included a look at the new exhibition – "Grog, Gangs and Gambling: Crime Between the Wars" and the Pyjama Girl Murder.

BAA BAA
Wool Weekend at Elizabeth Farm
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
This demonstration was held at Historic Elizabeth Farm, the home of John and Elizabeth Macarthur and Australia's oldest colonial dwelling. The first sheep came to Australia with the First Fleet in 1788. These had hairy fleeces and were suitable for food, not wool production. In 1797, some Spanish Merinos from South Africa, with heavy fleeces of very fine wool, were sold to John Macarthur, which he crossbred with his existing sheep. The activities for the week end included: sheep shearing demonstrations and sheep dog trials, merino sheep descended from Macarthur's original flock, demonstrations by the Hand Spinners, demonstrations of knitting, young lambs which could be bottle-fed by children.

CAMELLIA CONNECTION
Elizabeth Farm
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
This superb colonial camellia exhibition featured a comprehensive floral display which gave the history and development of the camellia, including the original Macarthur camellias. Vases and pots brimming with flowers carpeted the Farm in a blaze of colour, and in the courtyard cuttings and plants were on sale to the public. For the enthusiastic gardener, camellia experts were on hand throughout the weekend to advise visitors on how to make their camellias thrive in the privacy of their own backyard. The CAMELLIA CONNECTION was organised in conjunction with the Australian Camellia Research Society (NSW Foundation Branch).

GARDENESQUE
An Outdoor Festival of the History of Gardening
Vaucluse House
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Gardenesque at Vaucluse House celebrated the history of gardening in Australia with a special outdoor festival in one of Sydney's great nineteenth century gardens. Gardenesque lead visitors through the evolution of gardening taste in this country from early attempts to recreate the European landscape with imported plants, through to bush regeneration schemes of today. Special exhibitions were mounted by the Historic Houses Trust presenting historic gardening material from different eras from the 1850s to 1920s. For the first time, there was information on developing water features within the garden. Garden history specialists offered short illustrated talks throughout the day and they provided individual consultations and advice to visitors. The Historic Houses Trust gardeners were also on hand to diagnose plant and garden problems and suggest remedies.

HERBS AND SPICES
Vaucluse House
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Herbs and Spices gave tribute to the humble herb which has found its way into our kitchens, sickrooms and gardens over the centuries. Although widely used in the 19th century, herbs were out of vogue for much of the 20th century and are only now regaining their popularity. Thyme, fennel, marigold and hyssop were once grown in the garden at Vaucluse House.

IN THE WAKE OF THE LADY MILTON
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
The Lady Milton was just one of numerous vessels which brought Irish orphans and other female immigrants from famine-wracked Eire and workhouses elsewhere in Britain to new prospects in Australia. Many of these young women were greeted by the Immigration Agent who escorted them to Hyde Park Barracks – the former convict work depot that had been recycled into a hostel in 1848. Leading into International Women's Day, the Hyde Park Barracks Museum has arranged In The Wake Of The Lady Milton, a pilgrimage to the Quarantine Station and shipboard lecture by Dr Richard Reid who holds a particular fascination for the 19th Century female immigrants.

SUSANNAH PLACE
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Relaunch of Susannah Place, The Rocks.
Susannah Place , a joint project by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales and the Sydney Cove Authority. This is small terrace of four brick houses and a corner grocery shop, built in 1844. The small terrace row, with each house containing three floors and generally two rooms per floor, was built for Irish immigrants Edward and Mary Riley. The Rileys occupied one of the terraces with their niece Susannah, renting the other three for £26 per year to working class tenants - artisans and labourers. The modest scale of the interiors, rear yards and washing facilities well illustrate the restrictions of 19th century inner city life.

SYDNEY STYLE: MARION HALL BEST, INTERIOR DESIGNER
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Hailed as the High Priestess of the Avante-Garde, Marion Hall Best is widely regarded as Australia's most significant and influential interior designer who used dynamic fresh colours and contemporary design to blast the 'eternal beige' of the 1930's out of Australian living rooms. This major exhibition, held at Hyde Park Barracks drew together for the first and only time this selection of the historic, the humble, the poignant and the bizarre from national and private collections. BARRACKS, MOBS AND PINNERS
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
From the staid muslin caps of colonial madwomen to fashionable fripperies for the likes of Joan Collins, award-winning milliner Lance Tyrrell is regarded as an international authority on the history of hat-making. Australian-born Tyrrell held a workshop, entitled Barracks Mobs and Pinners, at Hyde Park Barracks on Thursday 5 November 1992. He analysed and demonstrated the manufacture of headwear worn by the Barracks female immigrants and asylum women in the period 1848 – 1886. Remnants of original inmates' hats were found preserved in rat nests in the Barracks when the building was refurbished. Tyrrell, whose clients include film and rock stars and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, is currently preparing a book on the history of millinery from prehistoric times to the present.

COP CAPERS
Justice and Police Museum
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Cop Capers was a fun-filled, step back into time as children become police constables of the 1890's performing duty in the rough and tumble of old quayside Sydney. Children made and wore part of an old-style police uniform, before being mustered together to hear the duties of the day. As new recruits, they trained and performed the tasks that were needed to run a busy city police station of the last century. An experience of fact and fun, held within the historic police station and court of the Justice and Police Museum, Phillip Street, Circular Quay.

DRESSING UP
Elizabeth Bay House
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
The title conjures up images of children rummaging through boxes of old clothes or the labour intensive assembly of a 'to die for' ensemble for a glamorous night out. The exhibition, in fact, focused on the meagre, but some time bizarre, contents of the wardrobe that survived from past residents of the properties managed by the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales. 'Dressing Up' Remnants of the passed' was less a costume history display than a list of a reasons for valuing dress as an index to human nature and the social interactions of previous generations – the people and fashions that have passed through a place, much as we do today.

GHOSTLY ENCOUNTERS at the HYDE PARK BARRACKS
A Friday 13th Sleep-In
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
Hyde Park Barracks Museum contains a dark and mysterious past. The Barracks have rarely been occupied at night during this century. And yet one exception, The Irish Gold & Silver Exhibition held at the Barracks in 1989, produced a flurry of ghost sightings from the normally cynical and unruffled security attendants. Curator Lynn Collins was keen to unlock the secrets of these spirits and welcome any stout hearts, and/or cynics, to spend the night at the Barracks to make contact with the ghost. Participants slept in the flax hammocks based very closely on the originals which would have hung in dormitories in all rooms of the barracks at the time of the convicts. They were greeted the following morning with a convict breakfast of bread and meat.

GHOSTS
A Month Of Frightful Delight at Vaucluse House
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
A month of entertainment from the other side included a weekend of ghosts stories for children echoing through the haunted halls, a candlelit reading of Ibsen's spooky story, GHOSTS, by The Renaissance Theatre Company for grown up ghoulies and a photographic exhibition of spectres by Heidrun Lohr. Since time immemorial, mankind has been obsessed with the shady visions and fleeting glimpses of the after life. Is it a need for immortality or an intangible reality. GHOSTS at Vaucluse House offered the full spectrum or spectre of man's imaginings of spooks. GHOSTS by Hendrik Ibsen, written 1882, caused a scandal from it's first production and continues to shock with one of the most hair-raising final acts in the history of theatre. GHOSTS was read on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July by The Renaissance Theatre Company in the eerie drawing room with only candles to stave off the night.

Harry Seidler - The Man & His Work
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
SEEING SEIDLER was an unprecedented tour into the mind and designs of one of the world's most controversial contemporary architects – Harry Seidler. The Tour charted the prolific career of Harry Seidler by exploring four quintessential Seidler designs - Rose Seidler House (1949/50), Harry & Penelope Seidler's own residence (1967), The Hannes House (1985) and the Milsons Point penthouse adjoining the office of Seidler and Associates (1988). Rose Seidler House was commissioned by Harry's mother and heralded his dramatic debut on the Australian architecture scene. The modernist style house was such a departure from traditional Australian suburban architecture of the 50's that it attracted considerable media attention and public scrutiny. Winner of the Sulman Award, Rose Seidler House is acclaimed as one of the world's purest examples of modernism - paving the way for domestic design today.

This exhibition explored the history and ritual of 'taking tea' from the rudimentary approach of the 1860's to the present day examples of art in a pot. On display were a wide range of tea utensils and paraphernalia and a series of lectures were presented during the period of the exhibition. For many, tea is not just a satisfaction of a thirst but an entire ritual. The history of these rituals can be marked by the diversity of the paraphernalia; for example the English love of sugar spawned a sugar bowl larger than a pot and their preference for hot or cold cream saw the invention of a pot that could provide either on demand.

1810 -1822
Hyde Park Barracks
Historic Houses Trust of NSW
The Age of Macquarie was evoked in a major exhibition of $5 million of rare colonial memorabilia to unfold at the Hyde Park Barrracks. The exhibition coincided with the launch of The Age of Macquarie, an historical publication edited by Dr James Broadbent and Joy Hughes In little over a decade as Governor, Macquarie dramatically fostered a civilised society out of a unsavoury and disorderly penal colony. Whether his quest was motivated by ego or a farsighted policy of public benevolence, Macquarie's legacy of buildings and colonial reform set the tone for a golden age of arts and economic and georgraphic expansion – the first signs of the maturing of the Australian colonies.
